Formed in 2014, Macuco Quintet plays compositions by leader Joel Springer that are inspired by Brazilian music, 1970s jazz, and more. They also cover pieces by Brazilian composers Hermeto Pascoal, Moacir Santos, and jazz saxophonist Julius Hemphill. Multi-saxophone harmonies, playful rhythms, and interactive improvisations feature large in Macuco’s sound.

Macuco Quintet’s musicians are saxophonists Allan Chase, Rick Stone, and Joel Springer, bassist Fernando Huergo, and drummer Austin McMahon. All have been long-time artists, band leaders & music educators in the Boston area.
