Introducing PCM’s new program for Early Childhood Development!
Our new program is for children, ages three to five years old, with adult guardian participation. The program provides children with activities that develop rhythmic and singing skills and instills in them a sensitivity to the expressive qualities of music.
Saturday mornings. 6 week sessions.
Early Childhood Music – Pre-K and K (Ages 3-5)
Rhythm, melodic phrasing, memory, and listening are important for each class during each session.
Continuity between age-appropriate activities, and a sense of momentum (from rhythm, to song, to dance) keeps children on their toes and participating.
Each class may work toward a performance at the end of the session. Teacher and adult guardians work together to make music, movement, rhythm and rhyme a regular part of the children’s lives.
Adult guardians will learn the activities during class time, so they can share them at home.

Teaching Philosophy
Music is a central element in what makes us human, and children respond naturally to it: they make up their own songs and tunes and they respond immediately to sung instruction.
Their bodies almost automatically respond to rhythmic patterns with dancing, marching, waving, clapping, etc., in short, children have an intrinsic sense of musicality.
Recognizing that children come to the program with a variety of musical backgrounds, the goal of the program is to work to develop that which is innate, with age-appropriate musical activities.
Music operates on many levels. Not only a means of creative expression, it serves as a way to enhance physical coordination and mental abilities, and as a vehicle for instruction and communication. And it is fun!

Value of Early Childhood Music Education
Giving young children the opportunity to engage with music enhances all areas of their development, including cognitive, social-emotional, motor, language, and literacy. This exposure to music early on also instills in them a strong sense of rhythm and timing, of range of pitch, and of dynamic expressivity and timbre. Early childhood music programs can contribute to a stronger bond between parent and child as they share their musical experiences together.
Adult Guardian Involvement

Faculty
The Early Childhood Music program is under the direction of Robin Jellis who also teaches cello and leads a chorus program with PCM partners the YMCA and Boys and Girls Club.
